Marcus is manager of the Building Stock Modeling and Analysis group and senior research engineer at National Laboratory of the Rockies' Building Technologies and Science Center, where he is also responsible for business development and coordinates external funding, partnerships and collaborations with companies, government agencies, and other research institutions. He is an expert in thermal energy and conducts research in the areas of modeling, analysis, and testing of advanced building envelope components and systems to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. He also leads the Space Conditioning Technology Research Team for the Better Buildings Alliance Initiative. Marcus returned to NLR in 2019 after eight years at Owens Corning, where he led the Building Science Team and conducted extensive work overseas, particularly in Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Mexico). Prior to joining NREL in 2009, he was principal scientist at Johns Manville in insulation research and a professor of mechanical engineering at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul and Purdue University. He is active in ASHRAE, where he chaired Technical Committee 4.4—Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance and now chairs the Research Subcommittee. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and is a licensed professional engineer in Colorado.
