If you think that you already know everything about heat transfer in insulation and that the technical data sheets say everything about the thermal performance of the insulation material, you should think again. The phenomena that take place in insulation are much more complex and depend on how manufacturers design the insulation materials to achieve their performance. In this session, two building science experts with more than half a century of combined experience will explain how insulation works and how factors such as temperature, density, moisture, and air infiltration affect thermal performance. You will gain an understanding of how fiber, foam, and reflective insulation work that you can immediately apply to your projects. A comparison will be made between cavity insulation and continuous insulation, comparing the durability, comfort, health, safety, and energy efficiency of the different solutions.
Learning Objectives:
By attending this session, attendees will:
Identify the reasons for employing thermal insulation
Outline the heat transfer modes that take place in insulation and how they are relevant
Understand the big impact of in-situ conditions to deliver insulation performance
