Technical Weatherization 101 for Non-technical Staff

The Weatherization Program and the customers benefit when non-technical program staff have a basic understanding of the technical components of the program. Join us for an opportunity to gain a practical, big-picture understanding of how the weatherization program ensures effective, safe, and high-quality home performance work.
We will start with an exploration of the energy auditing process including how key diagnostic tools are used to help identify issues and guide solutions. Learn how the installation of common energy conservation measures (ECMs) such as air sealing, insulation, mechanical system upgrades, and baseload measures address real world problems in residential buildings. Health and safety considerations, including hazard awareness, safe work practices, and environmental issues are key considerations during the weatherization process for customers and workers.
Quality is integrated through the entire weatherization process and culminates with a final inspection to ensure standards and specifications are met. Program staff utilize many resources, including Standard Work Specifications (SWS), Field Guides, and training to support consistent and effective outcomes in the field.

Learning Objectives:

By attending this session, attendees will:
  • Define the purpose and scope of an energy audit, explaining how diagnostic testing supports accurate assessment, and identify common residential energy issues and corresponding energy conservation measures (ECMs), including air sealing, insulation, duct sealing, and base load improvements
  • Explain the role of key diagnostic tools (blower door, manometer, infrared camera) in detecting and quantifying energy performance issues and recognize health, safety, and durability issues associated with weatherization, including hazard identification and safe work practices
  • Describe the quality control process and industry resources used to ensure safe and effective project outcomes for workers and customers
