High MERV filters installed in air handlers with sufficient run-time can provide excellent filtration, removing fine particles from the air in a home. However, this filtration may come with significant costs, both in fan and building energy costs & HVAC system performance & longevity.
This session will provide an overview of particles & their effect on our health. Results from the ROCIS (http://ROCIS.org) initiative's efforts to retrofit furnaces & air handlers with better filters & address system limitations so that air handlers can be operated for longer runtimes will be summarized.
Particle counts were measured under different operating conditions. Pre- and post-diagnostic tests determined the fan energy, total external static, & air flow. The challenge of filter drop replacement & retrofit motors will be discussed. Implications for HVAC system replacement will be highlighted.
