What do Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, George Harrison, and J.J. Cale all have in common? They’ve all prepared to take the stage in “green rooms” with insufficient ventilation and poor indoor air quality (IAQ). What a shame, especially considering the rising costs of entertainment! Health scientists and engineers have been prescribing and debating appropriate ventilation rates for indoor spaces for over two and a half centuries. Some of our building methods, codes, and standards have changed significantly in recent decades, while others continue to . . . well, stagnate, a bit. Is it time to overhaul our menu of residential ventilation practices? Or can we glean historical insights and just tweak the recipes we’ve been using?
This session will reconstitute and vacuum-pack the rich history of ventilation standards in the U.S. for preservation and possible re-use, while employing the help of legends in Rock and Americana music to tell the story. We’ll then unpack the more recent ingredients in the sausage-making process of consensus-based ventilation standards. With some important audience participation, we’ll then harmonize those historical insights with what emerging technology is suggesting for the future of ventilation and IAQ. Ready to make “notes”? Don’t worry—it’ll be a Breeze!
Learning Objectives:
By attending this session, attendees will:
Discover the rich history of scientific findings and the development of voluntary consensus standards surrounding ventilation and indoor air quality
Appreciate the importance of retaining and analyzing the insights from health scientists and seasoned building science experts
Be asked to participate in the entertaining storytelling that the presenters will facilitate through their original musical performances, capitalizing on the creativity of Rock legends who also blossomed during the decades of emerging ventilation standards
